Did you know that a majority of Americans experience a mental health crisis at some point in their life? We all face challenges in life that set us back and sometimes those challenges can push us towards negative thought cycles that prolong our suffering. I specialize in a strengths-based, person-centered approach using cognitive behavioral therapy that helps my clients learn to challenge their own automatic thought patterns in a way that frees them to create the future they desire rather than be a slave to automatic thinking. I believe in a collaborative approach to therapy where we work together as a team.
Before moving into private practice, I used this integrated approach to create one of the most successful residential recovery programs in Washington State at the Lighthouse Mission, where over 80% of my clients were able to achieve a year or more of sobriety while making significant progress with a wide range of mental health struggles.
I specialize in depression, anxiety, attachment issues, adjustment disorders, trauma, couples counseling and addiction counseling. I have been trained by the Gottman Institute for couples counseling and use those methods to help couples develop healthy, fulfilling connections in both marital and pre-marital relationships.
I am a Professional Member of the American Counseling Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
In addition to my masters level education in psychology and counseling, I have been Level 2 trained by the Gottman Institute for Couples Counseling. I have also completed trainings on the ASAM criteria, crisis intervention, cultural competency, CALM, HIPAA and safety interventions.
Being a therapist does not mean I have it all together, quite the opposite sometimes. To maintain my own physical and mental health so that I can be a good provider for my patients I have an intentional self-care plan that reflects the following key areas of holistic health:
I am passionate about making a difference in my community by providing quality care for my patients and volunteering where I can. I have served as the Chairman for the Whatcom County Behavioral Health Advisory Committee, volunteered to facilitate groups for various community organizations, and serve regularly at a local homeless shelter.
I am currently licensed as an Agency Affiliated Counselor and Substance Use Disorder Professional. I also have certifications for CPR/First Aid, Infant CPR, CPI non-violent crisis intervention and am Gottman Level 2 Trained.
